Burma/Myanmar 1942-45 Tours

Note: Due to the volatile security situation in Myanmar since February 2021, the Myanmar tours have been suspended until further notice.

The following are some suggested itineraries for battlefield tours in Burma/Myanmar. They are by no means conclusive and are simply intended to provide a sampling of what might be of interest. These can be easily moulded, amended and reworked to suit individual requirements and available time.

I. THE ESSENTIAL BURMA WWII TOUR [7 DAYS]

For those with limited time, this week-long tour covers the key Burma Campaign sites in central and southern Burma/Myanmar. The tour will give you an essential flavour of the campaign and a sense of some of the terrain over which it was fought.

Main places covered: Rangoon/Yangon, Taukkyan War Cemetery, Sittang River Bridge, Mandalay, Bagan and the 14th Army crossing sites over the Irrawaddy/Ayeyarwady River nearby, and Meiktila.

II. THE CHINDITS TOUR [8 DAYS]

The main focus of this tour of over a week is the Northern Front of the Burma Campaign and the second Chindit expedition of 1944 – Operation Thursday. You get a feel for Chindit country and Northern Burma/Myanmar and see the sites of four actions that resulted in the award of the Victoria Cross.

Main places covered: Yangon/Rangoon, Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myitkyina, Mogaung, Blackpool (approximate site), White City, Indaw, and Indawgyi Lake.

III. THE LEISURELY BURMA WWII TOUR [17 DAYS]

This comprehensive tour of over a fortnight takes in the main accessible WWII sites across Burma/Myanmar. Using a combination of flights between the main cities and scenic drives through the countryside, it covers a range of battlefields, memorials, cemeteries, and other reminders of the war.

Main places covered: Rangoon/Yangon, Taukkyan War Cemetery, Sittang River Bridge, Moulmein/Mawlamyine, Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Death Railway Museum, Mandalay, Maymyo/Pyin Oo Lwin, Bagan and the 14th Army crossing sites over the Irrawaddy/Ayeyarwady River nearby, Meiktila, Myitkyina, Mogaung, Indawgyi Lake, Blackpool, White City, and Indaw.   

IV. THE FULL BURMA CAMPAIGN TOUR

(i) Including flying between India and Burma/Myanmar [14 days]

This is the first such battlefield tour on offer that takes in the Burma Campaign sites on both sides of the India-Burma/Myanmar frontier. In an adventurous and thrilling journey of two weeks, you will visit not just the main battlefields in Burma/Myanmar, but will also travel to Imphal and Kohima in India, where some of the decisive battles of the campaign were fought. It is an unmissable battlefield tour of the Burma Campaign.

Main places covered: Rangoon/Yangon, Taukkyan War Cemetery, Sittang River Bridge, Mandalay, Bagan and the 14th Army crossing sites over the Irrawaddy/Ayeyarwady River nearby, Meiktila, Calcutta/Kolkata, Imphal, and Kohima.

(ii) Including land border crossings between India and Burma/Myanmar [17 days]

Again covering sites on both sides of the India-Burma/Myanmar frontier, what makes this particular tour even more special is the overland crossing of the border at Moreh-Tamu - a route rich in Second World War history.

Main places covered: Calcutta/Kolkata, Imphal, Kohima, Moreh, Tamu, Chindwin River, Kalay/Kalemyo, Mandalay, Bagan and the 14th Army crossing sites over the Irrawaddy/Ayeyarwady River nearby, Meiktila, Yangon/Rangoon, Sittang River Bridge, and Taukkyan War Cemetery.
